Legends of Slots: more game than I expected

I'll be honest, I downloaded Legends of Slots expecting to delete it within the hour. The name made me assume it was going to be shallow. Instead I found a genuinely tidy symbol-matching puzzle with a sense of place, and I ended up playing far longer than I meant to.

The loop is easy to explain. You trigger a spin, a grid of themed icons settles into place, and your goal for the stage tells you what to arrange — a row of lanterns, a cluster of dragons, whatever the region theme happens to be. From there it becomes a planning puzzle: which tiles to lock in, which to let go, how to set up the next move. Legends of Slots rewards thinking ahead more than I assumed it would.

The structure is what kept me. Each region on the map carries its own symbol set and a little illustrated story that unfolds stage by stage. It's not deep narrative, but it gives you a reason to see the next screen. I cleared two full regions before I noticed how much time had passed.

A couple of gripes. The menus are cluttered and the celebratory animations between stages overstay their welcome by a second or two. If you can look past that, though, it's a smart, cheerful little puzzle game that fits perfectly into a commute.

My advice: play it in short bursts rather than marathoning it. The design clearly expects that, and it's at its best when you dip in, clear a stage or two, and put the phone away.
