When grinding is good and when it's filler
Grinding gets a bad reputation, but a good grind is one of the most satisfying things in games. The problem is that a lot of mobile titles confuse repetition with reward. Here's how I tell them apart.
A good grind gives you a visible goal and small variety along the way. In Ashvale Wardens, farming materials is fine because each run drops something you might use differently, and the combat stays engaging. You're playing the game, not waiting for a bar to fill.
Filler is the opposite: the same action, the same outcome, with the only variable being a timer. The moment I notice I'm tapping purely to pass time, I'm out. No amount of shiny numbers fixes a loop that bored me on the third repeat.
My rough test is this — if the mechanic would still be fun with the rewards turned off, it's a good loop. If it only exists to gate the next thing, it's filler. Most games have both; the great ones minimize the second kind.
So when a reviewer here says a game 'grinds,' pay attention to which kind we mean. We try to always say.
